The Healing Power of Story

Stories speak to us in a direct way – we absorb truths, teaching, and healing effortlessly when we hear a story. That’s why the great teachers have always used them. In my clinics I find stories so valuable. A patient who may be struggling with health issues can often see the images in a simple tale that can illuminate their own life. For instance? Well, there’s a Scottish story…

… of a fisherman who found a mermaid and brought her home. He took off her tail and hid it where it could not easily be found. Years later the mermaid-wife unexpectedly finds her wondrous tail again. She puts it on and dives back into her element, back into the sea, never to return to the heart-broken man…

A little story like this can open up the imagination and give someone a safe way to look at what ‘parts’ of themselves were left out of a marriage or a relationship, and how that may have contributed to the break-down of the partnership. Or…

Once there was a beautiful girl going about the market place, running barefoot in ragged clothes looking for a place to stay. No one seemed to notice her. The shopkeepers were too busy buying and selling. The lawyers who prowled the labyrinths of law did not see her plight or hear her plea. Even the fortune-tellers gazing in their crystal balls missed her running by. No one, rich or poor, beggar or merchant, saint or tinker, could see that little girl. But everyone saw the glittering lady who came there, gowned in colours of earth and sea and sky who laughed and sang and sighed as she went gliding by. Wherever she stopped people gathered and listened to the colours in her words. “Who are you?” asked the little girl. “I am The Story,” said the glistening woman. “And who are you , little one, that no one seems to see?” “I am The Truth,” answered the girl. “Will you take me with you?” The Story took The Truth under her warm cloak next to her heart, and there she has been ever since.’

This is a tale from Israel, and everywhere. Stories speak to us in a direct way – we absorb truths, teaching, and healing effortlessly when we hear a story. That’s why the great teachers have always used them. A patient who may be struggling with health issues, for example, will often see the images in a simple tale that can illuminate their own life.
